What is Laser Hair Treatment?

During this procedure, a trained doctor (or assistant) will use a special laser to destroy the hair follicles on a particular part of your body. The typical parts of the body where laser hair removal treatment is used one are:
• Face
• Legs
• Arms
• Back
• Chin
• Upper lip
• Bikini line
• Armpits

Basically, laser treatments for hair can be done on any part of your body, with one possible exception being if you have a uni-brow. If this is the case then it is recommended by some doctors to look at alternatives to laser hair treatment such as electrolysis or certain hair removal creams.

How Do Laser Hair Treatments Work?

During the laser hair removal treatment a sophisticated laser will target the melanin found in your hair follicles to essentially heat up and ‘burn’ the follicles and destroy or damage them. While the laser is more effective and safe in treating light skinned and dark haired people, there are different lasers that can also be effective and safe in removing hair from darker skinned people. Laser treatment for hair is not effective on very light hair or peach fuzz.

What are the Risks Associated with Laser Hair Removal Treatment?

The risks associated with laser hair treatments are minimal when the procedure is done properly. However, there are chances of burning the skin, discoloration of the skin (both to the lighter and darker side), acne flaring up, scabbing, and swelling of the skin. Again, a well-trained, experienced doctor will be able to use the correct laser properly and will know how to prevent these risks. Because so much depends on the doctor, however, it is very important that your thoroughly scrutinize and investigate several doctors in order to make sure they have the requisite experience and talent in laser hair treatment techniques.
