What is IPL Hair Removal

IPL hair removal treatment is similar to laser treatment in that it used light based wavelengths to target melanin in the hair shaft in order to destroy the hair follicle and prevent hair from growing back quickly. This is the same type of process that Alexandrite, Pulsed diode array, and Nd:YAG lasers use to remove hair as well. However there is one main different that makes the IPL hair removal machine different than the other lasers. IPL laser hair removal has the ability to use multiple wavelengths of light instead of just one wavelength. In addition, IPL lasers can narrow the band of wavelengths, and thus make the machine more specific during treatments.

As with other lasers, the IPL hair remover will work best with people who have light skin and dark, course hair. This is due to the amount of melanin in the both the skin and the hair. Melanin is what gives your hair and skin the dark color, and is also what lasers target because dark colors attract light. People with dark skin have higher levels of melanin in their skin which make it more difficult for the intense pulse of light to distinguish between the hair and the skin, thus making it less effective. This does not mean, however, that IPL hair removal treatments will not work on darker skinned people.

This does mean, however, that you need to make sure you have a IPL trained doctor perform the procedure, and that the doctor is experienced in the technique as well. While going to a more experienced and well-known IPL hair removal doctor may increase the IPL hair removal cost, it will be well worth it in both the short run and the long run.
