Why You Would Choose The IPL Laser For Hair Removal

The IPL laser stands for Intense Pulsed Light laser, and is a broad-based light. Technically speaking, an IPL laser machine is different from a traditional laser in that IPL lasers can use multiple wavelengths while the traditional lasers can only produce one frequency.

Because of this ability to use multiple frequencies of light, IPL laser treatment can have some advantages over regular laser hair removal, but it also requires very high skill and experience, especially for patients whose skin is darker. The ipl laser hair removal technique can be advantageous because the wavelengths can be narrowed, allowing the light to be more specifically targeted.

However, this brings along with it some additional risks, which may or many not outweigh the benefits. Specifically speaking, darker skinned people are treated best with long-wavelength lasers. The most commonly used laser for dark skinned people is the Nd:YAG laser. It is commonly used because it produces the longest wavelengths out of the other types of tradional lasers for hair removal. This is better for dark skin because it reduces the risks of burning and lowers the chance of side effects. Longer wavelength lasers are absorbed less by melanin, which is the substance that gives your skin and hair color. The more melanin your skin and hair have, the darker they are. As darker skinned people have more melanin in their skin, it is more advantageous to use the longer wavelength laser, as the skin will be targeted much less—causing less damage to the skin.

Obviously, when determining between IPL vs laser hair removal, make sure you know the risks and benefits involved. Ask your doctor which types of lasers he or she offers, and which one he or she would recommend for your skin. An IPL laser may be perfect for your skin and may be much better than other lasers, but your really won’t be able to tell without discussing the topic with your doctor (and better yet, several doctors so you get more than one opinion).
