Advantages and Disadvantages of Nair Hair Removal

Nair hair removal is probably the most well-know hair removal product on the market today. Essentially, Nair hair removal creams and other products (nair hair removal gels, nair hair removal lotions) are all what the scientific world calls chemical depilatories. Chemical depilatories are chemical compounds that are designed to remove unwanted hair. They are cosmetic products, which are not to be confused with prescription medications (cosmetics can be purchased over-the-counter without a doctor’s prescription). There are two basic chemicals found in Nair hair removal lotion, cream, or gel that make it an effective chemical depilatory:

• Potassium thioglycolate. This chemical, know for it’s ‘not so rosy’ smell attacks keratin, which is a protein found in your skin and hair. By breaking down the bonds of this protein, Nair hair removal face products are able to weaken the hair on your face, legs, or arms, and make it so the hair can be more easily removed.

• Calcium hydroxide. This chemical breaks down and attacks the hair’s proteins at the root of the hair. This further weakens the hair and enables easy hair removal.

While there are many, many more chemicals and other ingredients added to Nair hair removal gels, creams, and lotions, these two are the ones that are responsible for Nair being an effective hair remover.

However, before you jump on the Nair hair removal cream bandwagon, consider the following advantages and disadvantages of this popular cream.

Advantages of Nair Hair Removal Products

• Nair Hair removal products are relatively inexpensive. They are definitely much cheaper than Nair hair removal alternatives such as laser hair removal or electrolysis (though both those techniques can be very effective).
• They are ‘quick’ and ‘easy’. Nair products can be purchased over the counter, without a doctor’s prescription, and can be used basically everywhere—your home or on vacation. And, they are literally found in every drug store and even many supermarkets.
• There are many different products to choose from. Some have special perfumes, moisturizers, and other beauty-enhancing additives added.

Disadvantages of Nair Hair Removal Products

• The main disadvantage of buying Nair hair removal products is that the results are not permanent. While the creams, gels, and lotions will work, they will not prevent hair from growing back, as some Nair hair remover alternatives will. Specifically, both electrolysis (classified as a ‘permanent hair removal’ technique by the FDA) and laser hair removal (classified as a ‘permanent hair REDUCTION’ technique by the FDA) are much more effective longer-term.
• You may have a reaction to the Nair products. Everyone’s skin is different, so before you go putting any product over your whole body test a little bit out on an area like your arm or leg—don’t test it on your face. Remember, various chemicals are added to all hair removal products, so it’s best if you discuss your options with your doctor before using a product if you are worried or have extra-sensitive or allergic skin.
